ATD-PHL

Consulting SIG

Mission and Vision

The Consulting Special Interest Group (C-SIG) is a strategic initiative of ATD-PHL as part of its mission:

“To be the preferred source of high quality opportunities for talent development professionals to learn, share information, network, and support each other while building knowledge, capabilities, and productivity.”

The Mission of C-SIG is to support professional development for individuals who are involved in consulting work as part of their professional activities – external or internal – within an organization.  Emphasis is on the underlying consulting skills and capabilities that are required in any field of business endeavor or industry including not-for-profit and government work.

Vision of C-SIG

C-SIG is a community that gives members opportunities to develop their consulting capabilities through the sharing of experiences, techniques, resources and mutual support.

Membership is encouraged from individuals involved in consulting work as part of their professional activities – whether as freelancers, external or internal – within an organization.

C-SIG will primarily function as a virtual organization with occasional in-person events.

A primary goal of the SIG is to promote active dialog through interactive events, panel discussions, and community-style direct messaging between members.

Themes and Topics

Program topics will be guided by member input as the SIG evolves. The following are examples of the topics that the SIG will be offering.

  • The consulting track in the ATD Capabilities Model
  • Creating your value proposition and differentiating yourself in the consulting marketplace
  • Creating and building your consulting brand

In mid-career I left a senior line-management position as Commercial Systems Controller for a large Power Generating Company and took a leap-of-faith into the world of consulting.

I joined an international Consulting firm and over the next several decades I built and led successful consulting practices for several international consulting companies.

My consulting career opened the door to a world of possibilities and career experiences that went way beyond what any single “regular” job could ever have offered.

one of the things that I love about consulting is the opportunity to do interesting things with interesting people.”

My role as a Practice Leader opened the door to working with industry leaders across the spectrum of Public Utilities, airlines, banking and financial services, postal services, and the public sector.

One of the most gratifying aspects of being a Practice Leader is the team-building role; the opportunity to recruit and develop capable individuals and watch them as they go on to grow their own consulting careers and practices.

Right now, as the world is figuring out what is the new normal, many people are reevaluating their priorities. They are looking at consulting as a way of doing work that they enjoy—work that is meaningful and that makes a difference.

The Consulting SIG (C-SIG) will give people with an interest in consulting an opportunity to learn more about how consulting works. Whether you are working as an internal or external consultant, the C-SIG will give opportunities for networking, sharing experiences with others and for discovering ways that consulting can expand your career horizons.

For me, the formation of the Consulting SIG provides a new opportunity for giving back and to continue my work with individuals seeking to extend their consulting capabilities and advance their own consulting careers.
